El Obelisco Buenos Aires

Hotels near El Obelisco Buenos Aires, Villa Martinez de Hoz, Argentina .

Perhaps one of the most well-known of all the historic structures in Buenos Aires, Argentina, El Obelisco Buenos Aires was built in 1936 to honor the city's founding 400 years earlier. Situated in the busy Plaza de la Republica, at the corner of Corrientes and Nueve de Julio Avenues, the obelisk is an imposing vertical structure. Over the years, the obelisk has been integral in representing different political and social movements and sentiments. Decorated in modern years for the fight against AIDS, the obelisk was marked with the words “Silence is health” in the 1970s, which was interpreted as a harsh warning against political dissenters. Visitors can easily access the obelisk by taking the metro lines B, C, or D.

For lodging, consider the Obelisco Center Suites.
