Constituting the second oldest remaining structure in the state of California, El Presidio Real de Santa Bárbara was the last military outpost to be set up by the Spaniards in the Americas before the wars of independence began, having been founded in 1782. This historic site (added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973) includes only a few remains of what was the original Presidio, though the structures are quite elegant and imposing: a large adobe-brick and red tile roof tower and barracks area, with whitewashed walls, offer this part of downtown Santa Barbara real elegance.

El Presidio Real de Santa Bárbara has been cared for by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation since 1963, and as of 1966 the site is considered a California State Park. The location of the Presidio is 123 East Canon Perdido Street; the cost of admission to the Presidio complex is set at $5 for adults and $4 for seniors, with kids under 16 entering for free.
