El Rastro de Madrid is located in Alcorcon, Spain. El Rastro in English means ‘The Trail’. The market is located between the Ronda de Toledo and Calle Embajadores, by the side of Ribera de Curtidores and Plaza de Cascorro.
In the earlier days, tanneries were located in Ribera de Curtidores. The animals were slaughtered in a close by abattoir, and were then transported to the tanneries. While the animals were transported, often it left a trail of blood behind, which is how, El Rastro, was named.

There are around 3500 stalls in El Rastro de Madrid, which are governed by the Madrid Town Council. It is the most famous flea market held in open in Madrid.
This market us held on Sundays and public holidays. Large number of old and new items is sold in this market. Due to the popularity of this market, the local antique shops also remain open on Sundays.
The opening timings of the market are from 9.00 am to 3.00pm on Sundays and public holidays. The best time for visitors is around 11.00 am, when the market activities are in full swing.

El Rastro is easily accessible through various Metro stations such as Lavapiés, Embajadores, or Sol-Line 3, Line 5 from Puerta de Toledo, La Latina, or Acacias. The public transport buses stop near the market on days when the market is open.
