Retiro Park

The “Parque del Buen Retiro”( Retiro Park) is the most popular park in Madrid. It can get crowded during weekends when many families go for a walk in the park and when street musicians, sidewalk painters, fortune tellers, jugglers and street performers animate the crowd.

The Retiro Park is situated east of the city center, not far from the Prado Museum. Its main entrance is near the Alcala Gate, at the Plaza de la Independence.

The Retiro Park was first created as a royal park and it belonged to the Real Sitio del Buen Retiro palace. In 1632, the palace was built by King Philips IV as a refuge for the Royal family. Retiro stands for retreat, giving the name of the park and palace. At the time the park was well outside the city limits, but now Madrid has completely encircled the Retiro park. The 130ha large royal park opened its gates to the public in 1868.

Near the northern entrance of the Parque del Retiro is a large man-made lake, the Estanque del Retiro. Here visitors can rent a rowing boat, especially popular during weekends. An equestrian statue of King Alfonso XII oversees the lake. At the margin of the lake is a beautiful glass building, the Palacio de Cristal. In the park are also located the Museo del Ejército, an army museum and Casón del Buen Retiro, a museum with a collection of 19th and 20th century paintings.

A major street used to go through the park but is now only used for pedestrians, roller skaters, cyclists and once a year it hosts a huge book fair. Among the park's numerous statues, there is one to the Fallen Angel said to be the only statue in the world dedicated to satan.
