Set within the Cancún hotel zone, the Zona Arqueológica el Rey is an ancient archaeological site of the Mayan Puuc style. The site, for the most part, is made up of a series of platforms with round columns- which at one time would have likely supported palapa roofs. The zone was originally named for a portion of a statue depicting a nobleman’s face discovered amongst the artifacts, which now can be found in the Archaeological Museum of Cancun. The ruins are suspected to date back to 300 BC, and represent the earliest constructions of a fishing and maritime community. Today the site is home to hundreds of iguanas! The guards can be seen feeding tortillas to the iguanas at various intervals throughout the day.

The entrance for El Rey is directly across from the Caesar´s Park Hotel, and hours of operation are from 8am to 5pm daily. There is a new visitor center, and the entry fee to the site is $14.00. With very little to no parking, plan ahead and use public transportation when visiting.
