Elisabet Ney Museum

Hotels near Elisabet Ney Museum, Austin, United States .

Nestled just a block east of Shipe Park, in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin is the Elisabet Ney Museum, one of the oldest museums in the State of Texas. Built in 1892, the museum was once the studio of Elisabet Ney, a famous European sculptress who relocated from Germany to the United States in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, eventually winding up in Austin. From this studio, Ney dedicated much of her time to sculpting the frontiersmen of early Texas, including Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston, and also displayed her European work, including depictions of Otto von Bismarck, amongst others. The grounds have served as a museum since Ney’s death in 1907, with the museum itself, which resembles a small castle, remaining a unique part of Austin’s heritage.

The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 A.M. until 5 P.M., and on Sundays from noon until 5 P.M. The Elisabet Ney Museum is located at 304 East 44th Street in Austin, and admission is free for all visitors. Lodging options in close proximity to the museum include the Embassy Suites Austin – Central, Radisson Hotel Austin North, and Courtyard Marriott Austin Central.
