One of the largest parks in all of Connecticut is not just in Hartford, but in West Hartford, too. Covering over 100 acres, Elizabeth Park has been providing residents and visitors an expansive green area for gathering and relaxing since 1900.

Wealthy financier Charles M. Pond is responsible for the park's existence and name. In 1894, he gave his entire estate to the city as long as the park the city built was named after his wife, Elizabeth, who by that point was deceased.

The large and grand park includes a greenhouse, herb garden, and a rose garden. The rose garden was a source of problems during the 1970s, when volunteers had to raise money to save the rose garden since the city decided they could no longer afford the maintenance. The rescue efforts were a success, and the rose garden still stands to this day.

In addition to the greenhouse, herb garden, and rose garden, Elizabeth Park also consists of a number of tennis courts, bowling greens, a scenic pond, and even an area perfect for picnics. Elizabeth Park is open during daylight hours and on special occasions at other hours.

With over 100 acres of park, a number of the city's hotels are close to at least one part of the park. Some that are only a short walk include The West Hartford Inn, The Mark Twain Hostel, and The Hilton Hartford.
