Built in 1926 to honor fallen soldiers, the Elks Veterans Memorial is a symbol of peace and patriotism. The Elks themselves (the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks) is one of America’s largest and oldest fraternal orders, founded in 1868 and claiming around one million members. Following World War I, the society decided to erect a memorial for those who had lost their lives. The Elks hired architect Egerton Swartout to design the building and the Hegeman-Harris Company to construct it.

The architecture and decoration of the Elks Veterans Memorial is striking. The memorial rotunda is filled with elaborate stained glass, imposing statues and delicate murals. It will be appreciated by art and architecture experts as well as novices.

Admission to the memorial is free, and guided tours are available. Its hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. year-round. From April 15th to November 15th, it is open on weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The memorial is easily accessible by car and by bus.
