The Ellerslie Racehorce, known today as The Auckland Racing Club, started in January 9, 1874, when members of two clubs Auckland Jockey Club and Auckland Turf Club merged. It is the main race course in Auckland New Zealand for thoroughbred racehorses and one of New Zealand’s premiers racing club. It hosts 26 race meetings every year with its course popular for the magnificence of its lawns, gardens and trees as well as its steeplechase track.

Ellerslie Racecourse, under the banner of the Ellerslie Event Centre is where the first automatic totalisator designed by George Julius is installed in 1913. Champion racehorses that raced in the course include Kindergarten, Balmerino, Bonecrusher, Uncle Remus, Horlicks, I1 Tiemp, and Mr. Tiz.

It is the home to two of New Zealand’s major racing carnivals, the Summer Carnival and the Auckland Cup Week with its excellent facilities.

The Summer Carnival runs from Christmas to New Year period with Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. It was formerly the home to the New Zealand Derby and Auckland Cup.
