Atlanta is the proud home of Emory University, one of the premiere private universities in the United States. With an undergraduate population of around 7,000, plus numerous top-ranking graduate schools, including the Medical School and Law School, Emory is a bastion of creative thought and cutting-edge scientific research. It got its start in 1836 as a Methodist institution, and moved many of its facilities from the original campus in Oxford, Georgia, to a bigger location in the Druid Hills section of Atlanta. Generous endowments, like the famous one from Coca-Cola, make this one of the wealthiest schools in the United States, a fact which shows up in the beautifully manicured campus lawns, and state-of-the-art facilities. A campus-wide renovation project is currently underway, with plans to move many of the buildings, including the Hospital, to make the campus more user-friendly. The endowments also mean excellent financial aid packages for qualified applicants, including the Emory Scholars Fund, a set of competitive merit scholarships awarded annually.
