Paradise Valley Nature Reserve is a wildlife park and reserve that can be found in Durban, South Africa. Its history stretches back to 1850. Part of the reserve was first owned by Francis Drake, not to be confused with Sir Francis Drake, with whom he is said to be a distant kin.

Part of the reserve was once the location of a 27-megalitre dam, which was dubbed as the Umbilo Dam. This structure was first built in 1887 but was destroyed by a flood in 1905.

Another interesting thing to note about Paradise Valley’s history is the visit of a hippopotamus, which people named “Huberta.” This hippo was on a southward journey from her original home, and arrived at the Umbilo Waterworks, where part of the current reserve is, on March 16, 1929. Huberta was ultimately expelled from the community when she allegedly bit an individual from Westville and was shot dead at the Keiskama River.

Visitors at the reserve can enjoy a day of picnicking at the shores of the great river. They can also cross it via an old-fashioned rope bridge and follow its trail to a magnificent waterfall. Those who can do it can go all the way to the viewing site at the top of the waterfall. They can also find animals here like mongoose, bushbuck, duiker, and otter.
