The Erasmus University of Rotterdam gets in name from ‘Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus’, a theologian and humanist of the fifteenth century. The University specialises in three domains and has seven faculties. The domains are namely, Medicine & Health Sciences, Law, Culture & Society and Economics & Management. While the Economics and Law domains are found in Eastern Rotterdam’s Woudestein campus.
The Medical Sciences domain is situated in Hoboken campus’ ‘Erasmus Medical Center’ which is at the city’s western region. While ‘Erasmus Medical Center’ is Netherlands’ prominent trauma and medical centre, Erasmus University’s Rotterdam School of Management is Europe’s popular management school; its law school is also Netherlands’ biggest.
The University’s history egins is as early as 1913 when ‘Netherlands School of Commerce’ began operation with support from the business community of Rotterdam. Its name was changed during 1939 after the introduction of the higher education in the area of economics and commerce. The new name was ‘Netherlands School of Economics’ known as NEH in short. After that, during 1960s, other faculties related to Law & Social Sciences, Business Administration, Arts and History and Philosophy were included.
In 2006, Erasmus University was rank 92 (world wide) and 34 (Europe) by ‘Times Higher Education Supplement’. Meanwhile, ‘Financial Times’ ranking of ‘Rotterdam School of Management’ is 26 (of the world) and 7 (Europe). AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA have accredited it and this is a unique achievement.
The University’s alumni are distinguished scientists, successful business people and also noted economists.
