World-famous American author Ernest Hemingway is perhaps the most significant figure to emerge from Key West, Florida, so it should come as no surprise that one of the premier attractions in the area is the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. The author of classics such as For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea lived in the site from 1931 to 1939. Located near a prominent South Cost lighthouse, the Hemingway House was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1968.

Visitors to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum are welcome to browse through the rooms and gardens through which Hemingway himself once walked. Tour guides are available to answer any questions and give informed explanations. One most notable aspect of the Hemingway Home is the presence of the more than sixty cats that live on the grounds, rumored to be the descendents of Hemingway’s own pets. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the home’s book store and gift shop to pick up memorabilia.

The Hemingway Home and Museum is open 365 days a year from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with admission rates of $12.00 and under (October 2009).
