The Esplanade Theatre is a uniquely designed building adjacent to the Marina Bay and situated north of the Singapore River. The structure was built for the main purpose of hosting performing arts, exhibits, meetings, concerts, art-related activities for international and local artists. It offers world-class equipment and facilities and professional support. The building is composed of two huge rooms. The concert hall alone can accommodate 1,600 seats and while the theater area can seat 2,000 audience.

The Esplanade also houses the Library at Esplanade which is found on the third floor. Aside from the indoor theater hall, concert hall and library, there are open spaces for outdoor performances, several food stalls and retail shops.

The building was formally opened on October 12, 2002. It was an instant hit all over the world because of its durian shape design rooftop mainly made up of aluminium sunshades. The concept was created by Michael Wilford and Partners, a London-based group and DP Architects, a local company.

On July 5, 2005, the International Olympic Committee held their annual session at the Esplanade with a 30-minute performance from Singapore Performance Group, showcasing the countries cultural heritage.
