The Esposizione Universale Roma, originally called E42, is a large complex, now a suburban area and business centre, located in Rome, Italy.
The business concept was started in 1935 by Benito Mussolini and planned to open in 1942 to celebrate twenty years of Fascism, but the exhibition never took place due to World War II. In urban planning terms, EUR was designed to direct the expansion of the city towards the south-west, connecting it to the sea.
The most illustrative building of the fascist style at Esposizione Universale Roma is Palazzo della Civiltą Italiana (1938-1943), an iconic project which has since become known as the Square Colosseum.
Whilst the arches of the building are a reminder of the Colosseo arches, the four statues at its corners have many points in common with those in Piazza del Quirinale. The building has a very neat and modern design and the mosaics and the reliefs which embellished it are evocative of Ancient Rome. The mosaics replicate a pattern typical of Caracalla's Baths and the reliefs portrayed ancient monuments.
Other attractions at the complex include the Museum of Roman Civilization , the Pigorini National Museum of Prehistory and Ethnography and the sports arena Pala EUR (now Pala Lottomatica), designed by Pier Luigi Nervi and Marcello Piacentini for the 1960 Summer Olympics.
Two underground railway stations, Eur Fermi and Eul Palasport, are just 100 m away from the business centre, so getting there will not be a problem.
