Essen Cathedral, also called Essener Münster or Essener Dom, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Essen. Dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian and the Blessed Virgin Mary, the church dates back to 845 and is on the Burgplatz in the city of Essen, Germany.
The city of Essen grew up around Essen Cathedral. The Gothic hall style cathedral was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in light-colored sandstone. Remnants of the pre-Romanesque cathedral that stood there years ago are evident in the octagonal westwork and the crypt. A cloister that also served as an abbey sits to the north of the church.
Treasures within Essen Cathedral include the Essener Domschatz, containing the Golden Madonna, the oldest fully sculptural figure of Mary that can be found north of the Alps. Also inside the cathedral is a famous 1000 year old, seven-armed candelabra.
The cathedral is open to visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Wednesday until 7 p.m.), and Sunday from 11.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Mondays and on some public holidays. Admission is $4.50 USD.
