Located in the middle of the City of the Sun, Estadio Dr. Joao Claudio Vasconcelos Machado is the largest football stadium and concert venue in Natal, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte, the easternmost state of Brazil. Referred to almost exclusively as Estadio Machado, the stadium is owned by the State Government, and is home to two football clubs, ABC Football Club, and America de Natal Football Club, with almost every resident of Natal being for one team or the other.

Construction of Estadio Machado was completed in 1972, and the stadium has an official capacity of 35,000 people, although it has been known to hold as many as 53,000 for important football matches. With Natal having been designated as a host city for the 2014 World Cup, and the construction of the new Dunas Stadium having begun, Machado’s days as the primary stadium in the city are likely numbered; however, pending the completion, Machado will continue to serve as important venue in Natal.
