Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho, also known as Estadio do Maracana (Maracana Stadium) is one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest and most important soccer stadiums. Opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup, today it is largely used for the major soccer clubs in Rio, including Botafogo and Vasco de Gama. It seats nearly 90,000 spectators and is the largest stadium in South America.

The stadium is set to host the World Cup Final in the 2014 World Cup. It will also be the centerpiece of the 2016 Olympic Games – the site of both the opening and closing ceremonies as well as soccer matches.
