The Estates Theatre

The Estates Theatre is a historic theatre in Prague, Czech Republic close to the bottom side of Wenceslas Square, at the Old Town. Estate is one of the most beautiful theatres in Europe designed in Classicist style and since its foundation it remained practically unchanged. It can be proud of the fact that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played his opera Don Giovanni here for the first time.
The Estates Theatre was erected during the late 18th century in response to Enlightenment thought regarding general access to the theatre, and theatres themselves demonstrating the cultural standards of a nation. The Estates Theatre was constructed in a little less than two years by the aristocrat František Antonín Count Nostitz Rieneck.
In its first years of existence it was known as Count Nostitz’s Theatre. The theatre opened in 1783 with a performance of the tragedy Emilia Galotti by the German play-wrighter Gotthold Lessing. The building itself remains one of the few European theatres to be kept in its almost original state to the present day.
The Estates Theatre underwent more than one changes in its history. It was first given the name Royal Theatre of the Estates in 1798 when it was purchased by the Czech Estates. In 1862, the Theatre of the Estates was renamed the Royal Provincial German Theatre. Between 1920 and 1948 the theatre got back the name Theatre of the Estates and became affiliated with the National Theatre. In 1948 the theatre was renamed the Tyl Theatre and would be known as such until 1990 when, at the end of an eight year reconstruction project, it became known again as the Estates Theatre.
Today, the Estates Theatre offers performances of dramas, ballets and operas with the focus of the opera company on the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Prague Inn, Metamorphis Excellent are some of the hotels in the area, with prices starting from 50 euros.
