The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility is an ambitious project, a joint research facility located in Grenoble, France.
In the year 1988, twelve European countries joined forces to create the synchrotron in Grenoble. Since then, seven more countries have joined the group and together they create the indispensable synergy needed to carry out advanced scientific research.
It operates the most powerful synchrotron radiation source in Europe. Each year several thousand researchers travel to Grenoble where they work in a first-class scientific environment to conduct exciting experiments at the cutting edge of modern science. Research in the ESRF focuses, mainly, on the use of X-ray radiation in fields as diverse as protein crystallography, earth science, materials science, chemistry and physics.
The facility shares its site with several other institutions including the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory.
The synchrotron can be easily reached by car using the motorways that link Grenoble with Lyons and Paris, Geneva, Milan, Marseilles and Barcelona. There is also a regional airport at St Geoirs (40 minutes from Grenoble) that tourists may use if they are flying from London. A bus from the airport to Grenoble is provided after every plane landing and stops at Grenoble bus station, which is next to the railway station.
