The World Expo 2010 held in Shanghai is China’s next major move to signify the Republic’s new place in the modern world as a major economic and cultural hub. With the theme of Better City -- Better Life, the expo was slated to be held from May 1 to October 31, 2010. The Expo also has an online version called Expo Shanghai Online. It is represented by a blue mascot named Haibao, from the Chinese character for ‘people.’

The Expo will be held at the Nanpu Bridge-Lupu Bridge region, right at the heart of the city on both sides of the Huangpu River. It will be fed by a number of metro lines which have all been constructed for the event. These include Shanghai Metro Line 7, Shanghai Metro Line 8 South Extension and Metro Line 13, all of which are expected to bring visitors from all over the city to and from the expo site.

The expo is a gathering of different nation-participants with their own pavilions where they can showcase their cultures for others to see. Aside from plain sightseeing there is a virtually, endless number of activities to do during this anticipated event, from trying out various international cuisine, watching different showcases of traditional songs and dance as well as presentations on new technologies and innovations spearheaded by each country. One hundred and ninety-two countries as well as forty-nine international organizations have confirmed their participation in the event.

Accommodation options for the Expo include the Shanghai Courtyard by the Marriot Hotel, one of the most-recommended hotels for EXPO visitors and the FX hotel Shanghai at Lujiazui. The Ritz-Carlton Pudong recently opened, just in time to provide luxury accommodations to Expo visitors. With the city’s 500 star-rated hotels, there is no problem looking for good accommodations.
