Eyre Square

Eyre Square is an urban public park in Galway, Ireland. The park is within the city centre, neighboring the nearby shopping area of Williams Street and Shop Street.

The park is rectangular, surrounded by streets that form the major traffic arteries into Galway city centre although the West side of the Square was banned for cars in 2006.

The origin of the square dates back to the medieval open space in front of town gate, known as The Green. The parcel of land that became Eyre Square was officially presented to the city in 1710 by Mayor Edward Eyre, from whom the park took its name.

In the middle of 19th century the entire park underwent a development in Gregorian style. In 1965, the park was renamed "Kennedy Memorial Park" in honor of US President John F. Kennedy, who visited Galway city a short time before his assassination in 1963.

A restoration work of the square began in 2004. The park reopened on 13 April 2006 after costing 9,6 million euros. The new square was awarded the Irish Landscape Institute Design Award in 2007.

Among the main sights, situated at the top of Eyre Square, beside the Browne Doorway, are two large, cast-iron cannons. They make an impressive display and have been there for longer than many of the other monuments in the square. A statue of Irish language writer Pádraic Ó Conaire was created in his memory in 1935. However during the restoration works, this was moved and it now resides in the new Galway city Museum in the Spanish Arch area of the city. A bust of US President John F Kennedy also stands in the Eyre Square park and it was erected on the spot from where he addressed the people of Galway.

The Browne doorway is also another attraction in Eyre Square and it was moved in 1905 from Abbeygate street to Eyre Square.
