Fair Leipzig

Fair Leipzig is the major trade fair found at Leipzig in Germany. For about millennium of years, many numbers of important trades were done in this convention centre which is across the central Europe. But after the Second World War, this trade fair has been shifted to the East Germany border and there after it has become one of the important trade fairs in Germany. Many business people and politicians used this Fair Leipzig as traditional meeting point for conducting their businesses.

The Fair Leipzig was constructed during the middle age the first trade fair was held in 1165. Two trade fairs namely Otto the Rich and Margrave of Saxony were hosted in this centre. There after numerous merchants have settled in this Leipzig. At present the goods that are traded in this trade center includes herring, cloth, wine and pepper. It also offered its merchants to sell their goods and has become an Imperial privilege.
During the 18th century, major Polish and English goods have been traded in this Fair Leipzig and hence it was named as the market place of the entire Europe. At present a new trade fair is there which was opened in the year 1996. This has hosted many important trade fairs such as Games Convention, the Leipziger Buchmesse, and Auto Mobil International.

The Leipzig fair today
In 1996, a new trade fair ground was opened. The Congress Centre Leipzig was also opened, built after designs by Gerkan, Marg and Partner. The old trade fair ground is used for shops, events, supermarkets and figure skating events, although many areas are empty and unused. Today, the most important fairs are the Games Convention, the Leipziger Buchmesse and the Auto Mobil International.

New Trade Fair building
The new Leipzig Trade Fair was built in 1995, and opened in April 1996. The new fairground consists of six halls: five exhibition halls, which have a size of 20 000 m², and the world largest levitated Glass Hall, designed by Ian Ritchie Architects. The fairground has about 7,000 parking spaces and is accessible by tram, train, bus or car.
