Serving the people of the town of Apia in Samoa, Faleolo Airport could not accommodate jet airplanes larger than the Boeing 737 until the year 1984. Previously, larger jets would have to land at the nearby Pago Pago International Airport in the Tafuna Village in American Samoa. Since its expansion, however, international traffic in Faleolo still only has one service to Honolulu.

Flexible surface runways, medium strength sub-grade, medium-tyre pressure and technical evaluations have been installed for safety purposes. The Boeing 747 is the largest aircraft to land at Faleolo Airport. The runway is still not strong enough for DC-10 planes however. Currently, Faleolo Tower has jurisdiction over the American Samoan and Tonga airspace as well as its own. It is assisted by the Fiji tower and the entire area is under the Auckland New Zealand Oceanic Control. Smaller propeller jets connect the independent Samoa and American.

Airlines included are the Air New Zealand, Inter Island Airways, Polynesian Airlines and the Virgin Blue. Destinations include Auckland, Los Angeles, Tonga, Honolulu, Nadi, Ofu, Pago Pago, Tongatapu, Brisbane and Sydney.
