The airport got its start after pilots during World War Two had to land their planes in a grassy land strip south of Highway 11, and the community began to notice a need for a regional airport. Two paved runways and a terminal were constructed in 1948. Commercial airline service began in 1953.

Today, daily commuter service is available between the airport and Minneapolis-St. Paul through Delta/Northwest Airlines. During the summer, nonstop jet service is available.
