Discovered by local resident John Knox one day in 1862, when his dog crawled through the cave entrance, Fantastic Caverns is a network of caves in Springfield, Missouri. Knox, who did not want either the Union or Confederate Army to use the cave, as the American Civil War was raging at the time of discovery, kept it a secret until 1867, when he started giving guided tours.

Today, Fantastic Caverns offers visitors the opportunity to ride through the entire cave in a jeep-drawn tram, and is the only cave in the United States to offer a ride-through tour. The temperature in the cave stays around 60 degrees year round, making it a popular destination in the winter and summer months. In addition to the 55-minute jeep tours, Fantastic Caverns offers a number of educational programs to local schools.

Fantastic Caverns is located at 4872 North Farm Road 125 in Springfield, and opens daily at 8 A.M., closing between 4 P.M. and 8 P.M. depending on the time of year. Tours depart every 20 or 30 minutes, and admission ranges from $13.50 to $21.50, with special rates for group tours.
