Farmleigh House

Farmleigh was formerly one of the Dublin homes of the Guinness brewing family. It is located on extensive private gardens of 31 hectares to the north-west of the Phoenix Park, 5km from Centre of Dublin. It was purchased from the Guinness family in 1999 for €29.2m and, after extensive renovation by the Office of Public Works, is now the official Irish State Guest House.
Developed in order to provide accommodation for visiting dignitaries and guests of the nation, for high level Government meetings, it was also opened to the public in July 2001. Farmleigh remains a unique representation of its glory days, the Edwardian period, when rich industrialists had replaced landowners as the builders of large mansions in Ireland.
Edward Cecil Guinness, the great-grandson of Arthur Guinness, built Farmleigh around a small Georgian house in the 1880's. Many of the artworks and furnishings he collected for Farmleigh remain in the house on loan from the Guinness family to the State, like the Benjamin Iveagh collection of rare books, bindings and manuscripts which is kept in the Library.
When not being used for official government use, the premises are open for public tours. It is also the location for the RTÉ proms, a public concert series that takes place each summer in a large marquee built on the grounds of the house. Tourists can also circumnavigate the lake, explore the Victorian dairy, and stop for lunch in the Boathouse Restaurant or a coffee in the Motorhouse Café. A programme of cultural events includes regular foodmarkets in the Victorian courtyard, music festivals and seasonal events. Guided Tours are available too, access to house being by guided tour only with a maximum number of 25 persons and a duration of 30-45 minutes.

The destination can be reached by bus number 37 from Hawkins Street to the Castleknock Gate. The House is a fifteen-minute walk from the Castleknock Gate through the park.
Accommodation in the area can be found in hotels such as Days Hotel Park West, Best Western Sheldon Park Hotel with rates starting from 39 euros.
