Opened in 1967, Fashion Island is today one of Newport Beach, California's premiere upscale retail destinations. The mall was designed in a Spanish architectural style and is owned by the Irvine Company. While it features a vast array of shops and boutiques, it was also created to serve as a home to the larger department stores of J.C. Penney, The Broadway, J.W. Robinson's, and Buffum's. The lineup has since changed, with J.C. Penney moving out and Neiman Marcus and Bullocks Wilshire coming in. Fashion Island was renovated in 1988; among other expansionary changes, a new food court and a major movie theater were added.
