Hotels near Fernbank Science Center, Atlanta (Georgia), United States .

The Fernbank Science Center is a museum, classroom and woodland complex owned and operated by the DeKalb County School System in Atlanta, Georgia. Opening its doors in 1967, the center seeks to promote the understanding of science and technology while communicating to visitors the ordered harmony of the natural world. Including an exhibit hall, forest, planetarium, observatory and library, the Fernbank Science Center serves as both an educational and entertainment institution.

Two main attractions at the Fernbank Science Center are the forest and the planetarium. The forest is a 65-acre tract of undisturbed woods – reminiscent of the vegetation originally found in the area. The Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium is a 50-seat theater equipped with a 70-foot dome. It is one of the largest planetariums in the United States.

Those wishing to visit should first visit the center’s website at www.fernbank.edu. Hours vary depending upon exhibits and days of the week, though the entire complex is closed on Sundays. Both admission to the Fernbank Science Center and parking are free of charge. Planetarium shows are extremely affordable at just $4 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens (information valid September 2009). Near the Holiday Inn and other local hotels, visitors should have no problem getting to and from this fantastic educational center.
