Ferreira Square got its name from the renowned local pharmacist Antonio Rodrigues Ferreira, whose work was a big part of the region's social history. Located right in the vibrant area of the city center, Ferreira Square was inaugurated in 1829, with the original name of Feira Nova. After that, it was named Largo das Trincheiras, and its current name was finally bestowed upon it in 1871. Its immediate surroundings are an interesting blend of modern shops and restaurants, and old Brazilian architecture. The gardens were rearranged and a new column installed in 1991, which restored it to a look that is closer to its original one. The city has chosen the square as an icon, and visitors can look for it between Floriano Peixoto, Guilherme Rocha, General Bezerril and Pedro Borges Streets.
