Filbert Street is famous for its steep incline and thus, at one point, its steps which people crossing the street must pass. Filbert starts over in the Presidio and terminates near Coit Tower on Kearny, where the steps are located. These steps take visitors down to the Embarcadero from Telegraph Hill and are known as one of the spots where wild parrots can be seen. The origin of the parrots is unknown, but their residence in the area is part of the local lore of San Francisco. Filbert Street is one of the steepest streets in the country. Lombard Street, the “world’s most crooked street,” is nearby.
