Finnish National Opera

Hotels near Finnish National Opera, Helsinki, Finland .

‘Finnish National Opera’ is known as ‘Suomen Kansallisooppera’ in the Finnish language and ‘Finlands Nationalopera’ in the Swedish language. It is Finland’s well known opera company. Its base is Töölönlahti bay’s Opera House that is at Töölö and began staging performances here in 1993. Kaarlo Bergbom founded it and operas started to happen from 1873. Before its inception, operas were performed by amateur performers and touring companies. 1849’s ‘The Barber of Seville’ is one such production. In the year 1879, the Opera Company suffered due to an economic crisis but the company managed to weather the storm. The opera company functioned for 6 years and in that period there were 26 operas and 450 performances. An important point that is worth mentioning is that the opera company has successfully demonstrated the fact that Finnish language can be used for opera. Since Finnish opera reeled under financial pressure and had to be disbanded, Helsinki audiences had limited choice and had to be entertained by the operas of opera companies that visited Helsinki now and then. Some operas also happened at ‘Finnish National Theatre’. Much later, after thirty years, Finnish opera reincarnated and during 1911, Domestic Opera was founded by some distinguished cultural and social personalities. The team was led by Aino Ackté, a star soprano. ‘Finnish National Opera’ staged 4-6 premieres last year which includes Rasputin world premiere. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_National_Opera http://www.ooppera.fi/etusivu.asp?kieli=2
