For astronomy buffs and anyone looking for an exciting and informative learning experience, there's no better museum in Tucson than the Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium. A popular spot for families, there are a number of hands-on exhibits, as well as special presentations.

Opened in 1972, the building was designed by a renowned local architecture form and financed by a generous donation from the estate of Grace H. Flandrau, for whom the museum is named.

In addition to the Science Center, there is also a special mineral museum that looks closely at the number of interesting rocks and minerals that are specific only to the southwestern United States. Visitors can make their own cartoons, learn the physics behind spinning ice skaters, or simply interact with computers in fun and unique ways at the Science Center.

Tours of the night sky are offered through the museum's planetarium, with various different special presentations throughout the year, too. For aspiring amateur astronomers, it's also possible to book a Sky Party with a personalized guide to the stars, at the museum or in your own home. The large telescope is open for public use during operating hours.

The Mineral Museum is open on Fridays and Saturdays, from nine until five. There are operating hours only for field trips during the week. The observatory and planetarium are open Wednesday through Saturday, from seven at night until ten at night.
