Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home

Hotels near Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home, Savannah (Georgia), United States .

While most earnest college students have a dog-eared copy of Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find and Other Stories" somewhere on their bookshelf, not many of them know that this remarkable woman who is basically responsible for an entire form of literature started out in a house in Savannah, Georgia.

For history buffs, literary fans, and anyone interested in an interesting life, a visit to the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home while in Savannah is, quite simply, a must. Recently restored to resemble exactly what it looked like while the O'Connors lived there, from 1925 until 1938, the two-story house includes a garden in the backyard, where Flannery O'Connor famously taught a chicken how to walk backwards as a young child.

Visitors can tour the garden, as well as the entire house, and take a look at the Bruckheimer Library, an extensive collection of books that were either in the O'Connor house or had a particular significance to Flannery while she was growing up and learning about literature. Each fall and spring, there is an insightful series of free lectures and readings that the public can attend.

Staffed entirely by volunteers, the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home is a non-profit, and rents apartments in the basement and on the top floor of the house to pay for its operations. A number of hotels in the historic downtown are just a short walk away, including the Hamilton Turner Inn Bed and Breakfast, the Olde Savannah Inn Bed and Breakfast Hotel, and the Hilton Savannah DeSoto.

The Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home is open daily, except for Thursday. Its hours are from one until four, and tours are available.
