Flinders Street Station serves as the central railway station of Melbourne’s rail network. All suburban rails in the city terminate at this location. It is operated by Connex Melbourne (soon to be MTM), has 13 platforms currently in use, and has 15 tracks. The station is located on the corner of Swanson and Flinders Streets. An estimated 110,000 commuters and 1,500 trains pass through the Flinders Street Station each weekday.

The French Renaissance style design that the station currently has is a result of a world-wide competition held in 1899. Two railway employees, HP C Ashworth and James Fawcett, won the competition and their design was named ‘Green Light’. The station is known for its distinctive clocks that sit under the main dome. It is a popular meeting place and is the subject behind the idiom ‘I’ll meet you under the clocks’.
