Ford Field is home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions. The stadium was opened in 2002 and has the capacity for 65,000 football spectators and nearly 80,000 for basketball. Located across the street from Comerica Park, the construction of this indoor stadium was based on a six-story former Hudson’s warehouse. Hudson’s was a retail department store chain based in Detroit that thrived during the early 20th century, but has since been re-branded.

Ford Field is unique among other indoor stadiums in that a large amount of natural light is let in through huge skylights and glass corner windows. Similar to the design of Comerica Park, the playing field sits below street level as to not impose on the Detroit skyline. Another interesting fact about the design of Ford Field is that it is one of the few NFL venues that has east/west end zones. This in unfavorable because of the potentially distracting sunlight, but Ford Field was given permission to utilize this setup. In doing so, they were able to keep the Hudson’s warehouse intact and incorporate it into stadium construction.
