Located at 511 10th Street NW in the greater Ford's Theatre National Historic Site (which includes the Petersen House directly across the street), Ford's Theatre is a very important landmark in the city, principally known as being the site of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination at the hands of John Wilkes Booth in April of 1865. The theater has been restored twice, in 1968 and more recently in 2008-9, and continues to put on theater performances and other kinds of shows.

Ford's Theatre is primarily a source of education and includes a basement museum called the Olroyd Collection of Lincolniana, which includes various memorabilia such as the assassin's personal diary, several personal items of Lincoln's, and even the very gun used to kill the president. Tours of the entire theater, including the basement museum, are conducted based on time of arrival, and admission is free of charge though timed tickets are necessary. Hours of operation are daily from 9am-5pm, however due to the theater's operations there are days when entry is not allowed.
