Constituting one of the largest public parks in the Portland Parks and Recreation network, Forest Park occupies some 5,100 acres of land in the northwestern district of the city along the southern bank of the Willamette River. The principal entrance to the park is found at the intersection of NW 29th Avenue and Upshur Street. The plot of land was acquired by the city in 1947 and immediately turned into a public park.

Forest Park has extensive, winding trails for walking, hiking, horseback riding, etc., and there is a tremendous amount of flora and fauna within the park to be observed, one of the primary attractions. The heavily forested areas that dominate the park (and give it its name) include lots of Douglas-firs, with some notably large specimens to be found. The parks 30-mile long Wildwood Trail loop connects with a larger loop in the region that connects with other city and state parks in the surrounding area.
