Located in Newport, Rhode Island, Fort Adams was designed by Major Louis de Tousard of the Army Corps of Engineers. It was constructed in 1799 as a First System coastal fortification. Captain John Henry served as the first commander, and the fort was garrisoned during the War of 1812 by Wood's State Corps of Rhode Island militiamen. After the war, the original Fort Adams was replaced with a bigger fort, which was designed by General Simord Bernard. The new fort's construction was finally completed in 1857 after thirty years. Fort Adams then served as a United States Naval Academy in the Civil War.
