On July 25, 1898 the U.S. Army invaded Puerto Rico, defeating the Spanish Army force during the Spanish American War. Spain later ceded Puerto Rico to the United States, and Puerto Rico has since been a U.S. territory. “Camp Buchanan” was established in 1923 at Guaynabo and Bayamón, and shortly thereafter designated as Fort Buchanan. Today, Fort Buchanan is the last remaining Department of Defense location in the Caribbean Basin and services the 65th Infantry Regiment and the National Guard.
