Fort Cornwallis

Hotels near Fort Cornwallis, Batu Ferringhi, Malaysia .

The historical star-shaped Fort Cornwallis is one of the largest forts in Penang, Malaysia. It is located on the north eastern coast of the region. It is named after Governor General Charles Cronwallis, the 1st Marquess Cornwallis of Bengal, India in the early 18th century. It is insofar the first structures in the country built by Europeans and the only remaining structure built by the British people in South East Asia.

Historical records showed that the whole island was owned by Captain Sir Francis Light in 1786 when he bought it from the Sultan of Kedah. The construction of the 417.6 square feet fort only started with a palm trunk or nibong with no clear cut structure. It was in 1804 when a convict from India reconstructed it with stones and bricks during the political governance of Colonel R.T Farquhar as the governor of the province.

The main construction of the fort, as what it is now, was completed in 1810 during the leadership of Governor Norman Macalister. It cost the government $80,000 to complete the structure. It served as the defense from pirates especially during the Napoleonic Wars.
