During the First World War, the 92nd Division against Imperial Germany was sent to the battlefields of France in 1918. These individuals were once officers from the 9th and 10th Cavalry “Buffalo Soldiers,” and 24th and 25th Infantry- part of the 17th Provisional Training Regiment at Fort Des Moines. Although not the first time blacks had served in battle, this course of events was a major turning point in the battle for racial equality in the United States. Between 1942 and 1945, the Women’s Army Corps was hosted by Fort Des Moines- a group that provided training for women and commissioned the first female officers.

Today these important historical moments and movements are celebrated at the Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center in Des Moines, Iowa. From regular tours and lectures to summer camps, the center is dedicated to historical education. The 24 acre National Historic Site on which the facilities rest is open to guests from 10am to 4pm Monday through Saturday.
