Fort Monte Serrat is an old military installation which dates back to 1583, when its excellent position was utilized for defense of the city. Also known as Forte de Nossa Senhora de Monte Serrat (or “Fort of Our Lady of Montserrat”), it represents the best of the military architecture of the colonial period. Further work was done in 1742, expanding the base and adding cannons to its arsenal. The fort stands as a symbol of the victories over the invading Dutch in the early 1600’s, when Portuguese dominance in Brazil was not completely established. In 1993, a Museum of Arms opened here, showcasing military and civilian weapons. There is a terrific view of the Todos os Santos bay from this point. Whereas once this vantage point was necessary for the defense of Salvador, today it is simply an excellent way to look out to Itaparica Island.
