Step back into history with a visit to Fort Morgan, located in Gulf Shores, Alabama. An American coast defense fortification, the Fort was active from 1834 until World War II. Take a tour of the grounds with a guide, and ask questions of “enactors” that truly bring the historical value of Fort Morgan to life. Originally a Spanish fortification, it was designed to provide protection against Native Americas in the area in the 1500’s. It is also the famous location of the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay. Educational and children’s programs are offered daily throughout the summer, as is a candlelight tour Tuesday evenings. A ferry shuttle is available to Fort Gaines, 8 miles away on Dauphin Island, another important historical landmark. Visit the Fort Morgan Museum from 9am-5pm daily, from 8am-7pm daily (Apr-Oct), and from 8am-5pm daily (Nov-Mar). Adult admissions are $5, seniors $4, children 18 –under $3, and 6 and under enter free. A family pass is also available that costs $12 for 2 adults and 2 children.
