Located in a dilapidated passenger depot that was converted into a museum back in the 1970s, The Fort Myers Historical Museum, also known as The Southwest Florida Museum of History offers a look into days past in southwestern Florida. There's a look back at the indigenous groups that inhabited the area, including The Seminole, Paleo, and Calusa Indians, and also pays attention to Spanish colonialism and settlement of the state.

The museum is about a lot more than just artifacts, even though thousands spanning a large portion of time are available to view. There is a replica of a pioneer house, and real-life fire pumpers from the 1926, as well as a Pullman car from the railroad, circa the 1920s. A number of traveling exhibits are also up at the museum throughout the year.

Travelers can make their way through the museum on their own, or they can go with the group tours, which runs an hour and a half and provides a comprehensive look at the state's history. There are also downtown walking tours offered by the museum.

The Fort Myers Historical Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from ten in the morning until four in the afternoon. A number of hotels are within walking distance, including The Holiday Inn Ft. Myers Town Center, The Hotel Indigo Ft. Myers River District, and The Sea Chest Hotel.
