Located in Nashville, Tennessee, the Fort Negley Park is one of the nationally recognized Civil War Sites. Union Fort Negley is today maintained by the Battle of Nashville Preservation Society and has tour sites available for visitors. The history of the fort dates back to 1862, when it was captured by Union forces. It was then developed by the Union into the “most fortified city in America” at the time. Fort Negley was the largest of the forts in the city and its name pays homage to U.S. General James Scott Negley. Today, what remains of the former fort is located atop a hill in southern downtown Nashville.
