Of the 19 harbor-front forts authorized in 1794 by President George Washington, Fort Norfolk is the only one that remains today. The fort overlooks the beautiful Elizabeth River, rendering it a natural site as well as a historical one. Its ramparts, dungeon, officer’s quarters and barracks date all the way back to 1810 and provide a unique look into the past.

Fort Norfolk helped Project the surrounding area during the War of 1812 and was used by Confederates during the Civil War. Restoration efforts, beginning in 1991, have allowed the fort to shine once again. Tourists are free to visit throughout the year – admission is free and self-guided tours are available during the week. Fort Norfolk also stages encampments – the schedules of which can be consulted at www.norfolkhistorical.org/fort/.
