Having served as an important military installation during the 19th century, Fort Point is located on the southern end of the world-renowned Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Bay. Today, the Fort Point National Historic Site attracts many visitors every year and offers a wonderful extra attraction to the already popular Golden Gate Bridge landmark. For Point was long ago deemed to be a National Historic Site and is operated by the National Park Service.

The fort traces its origins all the way back to the times of Spanish colonial rule in California, and has been remodeled and expanded on numerous occasions by the Spaniards, the Mexicans and finally the US military. Under US control, Fort Point was used by Union forces to protect against Confederate sabotage and attacks.

Visitors to the Fort Point National Historic Site do not have to pay any kind of entrance fee, and the hours of operation are 10am-5pm only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
