The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, located off of Highway 64 at the north end of Roanoke Island, in North Carolina, is the historically-notable site of the first English settlement in the United States. Whatever happened to the colony is still a mystery, but parts of its history, such as information about the English expeditions and Civil War history, can be seen in the visitor's center museum. The colony, which was supported by businessmen led by Sir Walter Raleigh, met its demise between 1587 and 1590, when ships failed to bring supplies for reasons which remain unknown. This Historic Site was inaugurated in 1941, when the property was acquired by the National Park Service. The outdoor musical drama The Lost Colony is performed here in the summers.

The visitor's center is open year-round (except Christmas Day), from 9 am to 5 pm (and until 6 pm from June through August). The park grounds can be visited during daylight hours, and The Lost Colony is shown nightly (except Sundays), from June to August.

Visitors can enjoy lodging at the nearby Tranquil House Inn or the Scarborough Inn.
