Fort San Felipe del Morro

Hotels near Fort San Felipe del Morro, San Juan, Puerto Rico .

Fort San Felipe del Morro is a testament to the long military history of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the rest of this tropical island. Designed by engineers Juan Bautists Antonelli and Juan de Tejada in 1597, construction for the fort began in 1589. Known in Spanish as El Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the fort became a United-Nations designated World Heritage Site in 1983, and is also listed amongst San Juan's National Historic Sites. As part of a protection system, this fort, along with “El Canuelo,” guards the entrance to San Juan Bay. After the United States Army left in 1961, the fort was turned over for administration by the National Park Service. Today, over a million visitors per year come to explore this stoic monument's crumbling ramparts and passages.

For lodging, consider the Holiday Inn San Juan.
